As vegan and vegan-adjacent diets increase globally, restaurateurs catering to the no-meat crowd face a conundrum: what type of eatery do they want to run? Some opt to win over the vegan-curious with familiar flavors. Others strike out in the opposite direction — unabashedly putting plants front and center. Others still take the How can this be vegan? approach. Below, Travel in Taiwanpresents worthy Taipei contenders from each camp.

Long famous for its rice and lunchboxes, Taitung County’s Chishang Township really came into the spotlight decades back when its mesmerizingly beautiful scenery was used in some iconic Taiwanese TV adverts. Many visitors head straight for these drawcard attractions, but exploring its charming old namesake town uncovers art galleries, small museums, and provides tasty sustenance.

The buzzing “C (coffee) by day, A (alcohol) by night” concept is reshaping Taipei’s dining scene. Many of the city’s cafés now offer extended hours, shifting from bright daytime hangouts and workspaces to relaxed, atmospheric bars at dusk. Some serve coffee and cocktails all day, even offering specialty drinks that creatively blend the two.

The coastal towns of Chiayi County are on upraised oases along an ever-shifting world of land and sea, sculpted by silting on a large scale at the edge of the wide, alluvial, and fecund Jianan Plain. The use of great swaths of just-above-sea-level land for aquaculture-farm grids adds to the dramatic effect of being in a world of water.

My first impression of Taiwan came at 30,000 feet. Looking out of the window of my airplane as it tracked up the west coast, I experienced a sense of awe as I glimpsed the towering giants of Taiwan’s interior. Over the intervening years, I have dedicated countless pairs of hiking shoes to learning her mountain paths, and yet I carry around a perpetually overflowing bucket list of unexplored trails. What follows is just a small fraction of the many high-mountain adventures I hope to have in the future.

When it comes to the many merits of Taipei, the three “C’s” — Convenience, Cuisine, Culture — often take top billing. But if you ask this writer, the city’s greatest draw is its abundance of easily accessible hiking trails and natural scenery. For those planning an exploration of the hills and mountains of Taiwan, the Taipei Grand Trail makes an excellent first step.

Its dual cultural and ecological richness means that if thinking of exploring the area itself or venturing into the wider surrounding Alishan National Scenic Area, travelers will discover no shortage of reasons to visit this beguiling region.
